The Truth Hurts

Buy the truth, and sell it not also wisdom

leavesThe truth simply hurts and offends. Galileo, a famous physicist, mathermatician, astronomer and philosopher, says this about truth, “All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered” he continues, “the point is to discover them”. I have found that the discovery process is what makes the truth so hurtful and offensive. I asked a friend this question, “If I were to tell you the truth about hot dogs and where they come from, would you still eat them?” Naturally, my friend did not want to know the truth about hot dogs because he simply loves hot dogs. His mind was settled on the subject of hot dogs.

Information about something in accordance with fact or reality is a definition of truth. Facts are often lost in the midst of elaborate lies that are created to distract us from what is really in front of us. Here are a few facts: water is wet, fire generates heat, ice is cold, daytime generally consists of light, and nighttime generally consists of darkness. Another fact to consider is that “people want to do what they want to do;” otherwise they won’t do it. Each of us has our very own deoxyribonucleic acid DNA that makes us unique from others.

basketThe truth is people lie. People create lies that they want others to accept as truth; and when the truth does surface, people revert back to the lie because it’s “more convenient”. The truth is a lie when I tell my children that Santa does exist; or that Halloween deals with spirits both harmless and harmful; or that rabbits lay eggs as a part of the mammal family; or that cupid is one of the fallen angels from heaven. These are lies that we want to pass off as truth. Our final example of the truth is that some clergymen are afraid to speak the truth in the pulpit because it may result in the lost of church members.

Solomon says this about truth, “Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.” In other words, take time to understand why we do what we do; for this is truly an investment that is priceless. The truth is . . . well the truth hurts.

What are some lessons that we can learn from the past that can help us in the future? The Garden of Eden can provide answers to some of life’s tough questions. God placed his creation in the middle of paradise; later to be removed for a life of hard labor because of a lie. We should always take responsibility for our own actions. Blaming others or making excuses only hurts our credibility and integrity. Never talk to snakes; even if the snake is walking and talking to you in a language that you understand. The snake probably is not telling you the entire truth. Remember, God sees all things, even when you think he is not watching. Be of good courage, your heavenly father does not lie. He loves you and wants the best for you. Be of good courage.
